Why should we stop cutting down tropical rainforests?

The plant biom of the tropics is a major carbon sink for the planet. Without the rain forests, more carbon will aculate in the atmosphere and contribute to global warming. Other reasons include the loss of biological diversity, which helps maintain conditions from change, and the potential for useful products (medicines, foods, etc) that can be developed from rain forest plants.
