What do you think truly motivates Fred Phelps and his followers?

Money - plain and simple. Many of the family are lawyers, and by provoking people to act against them or to attempt to limit their "free speech" rights, they then sue. That's what it is all about - people too lazy to work who are scamming the system and making a living by creating lawsuits.
